Small businesses are moving beyond AI experimentation and building more mature ways of using the technology. New research from Clutch finds that 59% of small businesses already using AI qualify as AI adoption Leaders, based on Clutch’s AI Maturity Index, which measures how systematically businesses integrate AI across technology, data, strategy, governance, skills, and culture. The findings are based on a survey of 600 U.S. small businesses using AI.
“AI maturity isn’t necessarily tied to company size or budget,” said Hannah Hicklen, Clutch analyst. “The businesses seeing the most value are connecting AI to business goals, training their teams, and building the infrastructure needed to scale.”
Key findings include:
- AI is delivering results. 83% report positive outcomes, while 81% say AI has contributed to revenue growth.
- AI is boosting productivity. 63% save time on repetitive tasks, 55% improve content and communications, and 49% use AI for ideas and creative problem-solving.
- Businesses are investing. 53% have a dedicated AI budget, while 50% spend $50-$500 per month on AI tools.
- Smaller businesses are keeping pace. 69% of businesses with 101-200 employees are Leaders, compared with 51% of those with 2-10 employees and 52% of solopreneurs.
- Strategy remains a gap. Just 54% have a formal AI strategy, measure AI’s impact, or report having clean, organized data, while 38% lack formal AI-use guidelines.
- More advanced use is coming. 62% plan to use AI agents, 46% plan to integrate AI with business software, and 42% plan to use AI for data analysis.
