Lexile-powered benchmark reading assessments provide educators with actionable measures to support instruction and monitor students’ reading ability
DURHAM, N.C. and PITTSBURGH, Nov. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — MetaMetrics®, creator of the Lexile® Framework for Reading, and Carnegie Learning, a leader in K-12 education technology, curriculum, and professional learning solutions, announce the launch of new benchmark reading assessments designed to give educators actionable insights into student reading ability.
Available to students this fall as part of Carnegie Learning’s Lenses on Literature 6-12 English Language Arts curriculum, the new assessments provide Lexile reading measures that help educators understand where students are in their reading development and monitor progress over time. Because the Lexile Framework places student reading ability and text complexity on the same developmental scale, a student’s Lexile measure can help identify appropriately challenging reading materials. This connection gives educators a practical way to turn assessment results into instructional decisions while helping students build the background knowledge and reading skills needed to engage with increasingly complex texts.
The Lexile-powered assessment system includes grade-banded locator tests to ensure students are placed in the appropriate assessment for their skill level. It also includes beginning-, middle-, and end-of-year benchmark assessments. Together, the assessments provide a consistent measure of reading ability throughout the school year while giving educators data they can use to support instructional planning and independent reading.
“By bringing Lexile measures and growth insights into Lenses on Literature, we’re helping Carnegie Learning give educators a clearer, more connected view of students’ reading ability and the information they need to support continued reading growth,” said Chris Minnich, CEO of MetaMetrics.
Connecting Assessment and Instruction to Support Reading Ability
Lenses on Literature is Carnegie Learning’s comprehensive, blended English Language Arts curriculum designed to engage students in authentic, rigorous, grade-level literacy experiences. Its standards-aligned and task-driven approach combines complex texts with reading, writing, and critical thinking, while giving educators multiple opportunities to understand student progress.
The new assessments developed in partnership with MetaMetrics add another dimension to those insights.
The assessments also complement the formative and summative assessments already embedded throughout Lenses on Literature. Ongoing formative activities, comprehension checks, and end-of-unit writing products show students’ development of specific skills, while the three periodic benchmark assessments provide Lexile measures to understand reading ability and monitor growth over time.
“Lenses on Literature is built on the belief that every student can read, write, and think deeply with complex, grade-level texts when given the right support,” said Barry Malkin, CEO of Carnegie Learning. “Lexile measures build on the support already embedded in Lenses on Literature, giving educators another tool to identify what they need to succeed with rigorous reading, writing, and thinking.”
A Research-Driven Approach to Literacy Growth
The collaboration builds on the research-driven approach at the heart of both organizations. Lenses on Literature evolved from the Literacy Design Collaborative, which brought together educators and experts from more than 40 states around a central question: How can instruction be designed on the assumption that every student can read, think, and write creatively and confidently using complex, grade-level tasks and texts?
Research on the Lenses instructional model found that, on average, students gained four to nine additional months of learning in one school year compared with peers. That instructional model has reached more than 2.4 million students and 100,000 educators across more than 940 districts.
For more than four decades, MetaMetrics has developed scientifically valid measures that connect assessment to instruction and show long-term student growth. Aligned with the science of reading, the Lexile Framework for Reading provides research-backed learning measurement to over 40 million students and over 100 million books, articles, and passages.
