One Snohomish County Family, Three Kids, Three Mentors: Big Brothers Big Sisters Says More Are Needed

A Snohomish County family with three kids, each matched to a different mentor, shows what’s possible. BBBSPS is recruiting more Bigs to do it again.

EVERETT, WA, UNITED STATES, August 27, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — In one Snohomish County family, three siblings are each matched with a different adult mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound (BBBSPS), and no two matches look alike. One pair has a two-summer streak of berry picking. Another builds birdhouses and visits animal shelters. The third has gone horseback riding and made a tradition out of escape rooms.

Three kids, three mentors, three completely different ways of showing up. It is the kind of thing BBBSPS is now working to make far more common across Snohomish County.

The commitment runs both directions. In a separate Snohomish County match, one mentor transferred into BBBSPS specifically so she could keep mentoring her Little after their original program ended, and the two picked up right where they left off.

BBBSPS currently supports a small number of mentoring matches in Snohomish County. The organization is now expanding that work into a full recruitment and enrollment system so more families across the county can be matched with a mentor, rather than simply maintaining what already exists. The push comes as BBBSPS enters its peak summer recruiting season, when interest in volunteering typically rises ahead of the new school year.

Mentor recruitment is concentrated in Edmonds, Mukilteo and Mill Creek, communities within easy reach of South Everett and the Highway 99 corridor in Lynnwood, where BBBSPS is focused on matching youth with mentors, with Marysville to follow in a later phase. Being a good mentor has nothing to do with income, background or expertise. It requires showing up consistently, a few hours a month, for a young person who is counting on it. Mentors are not required to live in the same neighborhood as the young person they are matched with.

Nationally, roughly one in three young people will reach adulthood without ever connecting with a mentor of any kind, according to research from MENTOR, the National Mentoring Partnership.

“We know there are young people here who are ready for the consistency, encouragement and belonging that a mentor can provide. Our evidence is clear: when young people are matched with a mentor, they build stronger confidence, deeper connections and a greater sense of what is possible for their future. That is what we want to bring to more kids and families across Snohomish County, and we need more adults to step forward with us,” said Alonda Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound.

Adults ages 25-55 in Edmonds, Mukilteo and Mill Creek interested in becoming a mentor are invited to apply. No prior mentoring experience is required.

Families in Everett and Lynnwood can enroll a child in the BBBSPS mentoring program at any time.
