The Byrne Energy and Climate Foundation (BECF), led by energy and climate scholar Dr. John Byrne, launched today with a mission few others in academic philanthropy are pursuing: funding doctoral fellowships that deliberately cross the boundaries between academic disciplines to confront the climate crisis.
BECF funds Ph.D. fellows whose research sits at the intersection of energy, climate, and justice — work that by its nature does not fit neatly inside a single university department, and as a result, often struggles to find any support at all.
“Climate change, energy transition, and environmental injustice are systemic by nature,” says Dr. Byrne, BECF’s Founder and President. “Yet academic structures constrain inquiry within silos, making it difficult for the most important research to get done. Breaking down those silos encourages innovation. Interdisciplinary studies are the transformative thinking we need to solve climate change.”
A Problem Only Interdisciplinary Work Can Solve
The case BECF is making is direct: the climate crisis is not only an engineering, or economics, or science, or policy problem — it is all of these at once, along with questions of governance, justice, and equity. Yet the university system that trains the next generation of climate scholars is organized around single disciplines, in fields that frequently compete — rather than collaborate — for scarce research funding.
BECF’s fellowship program is designed to fund the scholar, not a narrow deliverable. Fellowships are renewable for up to four years, giving doctoral candidates the time and institutional backing to pursue research that a single, discipline-based department’s funding cycle may not sustain.
The foundation is organizing its early support around three broad research areas: creating new energy-climate models for a transition away from fossil fuels; cultivating a new culture of interdisciplinary inquiry across universities and societies; and researching how to realize sustainable outcomes for all communities, not just those already positioned to benefit from the shift to renewable energy.
A Family Commitment, Built for the Long Term
Unlike many philanthropic climate initiatives launched in response to a single moment or event, BECF is structured as a multigenerational commitment. Its initial resources include support directly from Dr. Byrne and his children, Brian and Tara — what Dr. Byrne has described as “a pay forward fund.”
That commitment is rooted in decades of direct experience: over the course of his career, Dr. Byrne has chaired the doctoral committees of nearly 80 students, work that shaped his conviction that scholarship carries a responsibility that does not end at the edge of the page.
“I did not set out to accumulate a legacy,” says Dr. Byrne. “I set out, each time, to help one person find their path to real, applied understanding — and then to help them make something of it. BECF is an attempt to keep doing exactly that, well beyond any one lifetime.”
Dr. Byrne has been a contributing author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (including its Second and Third Assessment Reports) and is the co-founder and President of the Foundation for Renewable Energy and Environment (FREE), BECF’s sister organization. FREE’s research and pilot doctoral fellowship program helped inform BECF’s own model. Dr. Byrne is also Distinguished Professor of Energy and Climate Policy Emeritus at the University of Delaware.
A Fast-Moving Goal: Create Several University Partnerships Every Cycle
While many academic funding initiatives grow slowly, BECF has set an ambitious early target: establishing partnerships with 10 universities in its first cycle of development. Each partnership is intended to connect BECF with interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs and the faculty guiding them, creating a pipeline through which promising doctoral candidates can be identified and supported. As examples, BECF has fellows enrolled at Seoul National University and Arizona State University.
Fellowship applications are by invitation only. Faculty and prospective students are invited to submit expressions of interest at any time, which are reviewed periodically by BECF’s advisors, who are leading scholars and can identify top candidates for the program. Faculty submissions describe their institution’s interdisciplinary Ph.D. program and the range of expertise represented among its faculty; student submissions describe their research interests and how they see their work connecting to the foundation’s broader mission of energy conservation, environmental resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and environmental justice.
“No one else is doing this,” says Dr. Byrne. “There are funders who support climate technology, and funders who support single-discipline research. What we need — and what BECF exists to provide — is sustained support for scholars willing to work across the boundaries that our universities were never built to cross.” The next generation of climate scholars deserves the chance to conduct the most ambitious and necessary work of their lives.
