LOS ANGELES, CA, [RELEASE DATE]: Laurelanne PR+MGMT represented artist Kiki T has released her new single “Beautiful Life,” available now on Spotify and Apple Music.
“Beautiful Life” takes apart the life most people are taught to want: luxury, the South of France, the perfect body, beautiful people, the whole dream as it’s been sold. It lets all of it look as good as promised and then asks what’s still missing underneath.
The idea came from a conversation Kiki T had with a stranger. He told her he’d never married, never wanted children, and planned to spend every dollar he earned before he died. His favorite place in the world was Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the South of France, and he described a vision of disappearing after living what most people would call the perfect life.
“He also told me about a near-drowning experience,” Kiki T says. “What stayed with him wasn’t that he suddenly wanted to live, but that it made him realize exactly how he wanted to die.”
The conversation stayed with her. Here was someone intelligent, funny, and charismatic, completely at peace with a life built around freedom instead of attachment. The question she couldn’t put down was whether that peace was the real thing or a very convincing substitute for it.
“It made me wonder whether a life without deep connection is actually freedom,” Kiki T says, “or just another way of protecting yourself from being hurt.”
That tension is the whole song. “Beautiful Life” never resolves the question, because Kiki T isn’t sure the answer is knowable, and the track holds the surface and the emptiness in the same frame rather than choosing between them.
Musically, “Beautiful Life” is dreamy, cinematic indie pop with a bittersweet edge, beautiful on the surface with a deeper emotional tension running under it, in the lane of an artist like Lana Del Rey.
Water runs through everything Kiki T makes. Her debut EP was Aqua Eterna and this one is Aqua Obscura. She describes her writing space, a parked car in the garage with the door shut and the lights off, as feeling like being underwater where nobody can reach her. “Beautiful Life” started with a stranger who nearly drowned. She doesn’t plan the pattern. It’s just where she keeps ending up.Kiki T is an independent artist from Los Angeles who grew up on Oahu. She left a doctoral program in cognitive neuroscience to make music. “Beautiful Life” is the second release from her forthcoming Aqua Obscura EP.
